Take the time to craft a plan first. Know what your objectives are, who the target audience is, and how you plan to get there. Otherwise, it is possible to just float through the social sphere aimlessly.

Scope the Competition

There is a good chance that your competition is already established in social media circles. Find the ones who have achieved some measure of success and look at what they are doing with their online presence.

There is nothing quite the same as learning from those who came before you. Granted, you have to do more than simply take their ideas but it is a great way to build a foundation that will set the tone right from the start.

Create a Calendar

This goes into the planning aspect. Having a social media calendar can be a great way to know what you are planning to do and when it is going to happen. Whether it be interactions, scheduled posts, or any other creative ideas, it can all be managed in one space.

Start with the 80-20 rule: 80% of content should be to inform while 20% should be used for promoting brands or selling products to the target audience. When in doubt, that is the best rule to follow for social media success on any platform.
